| MISHKAH
SULTAN BAYBARS
Based upon a lamp made for the mausoleum of Sultan Al Zahid Baybars circa 1277 AD (676 AH), which was part of the collection of Edmond de Rothscild, this mishkah was created for the interior entry vestibule of Sofitel Sharm El Sheikh. Whereas the original prototype was inscribed with the name of Sultan Baybars, the artist has replaced the royal glorification with the Ninety-Nine Beautiful Names of Allah (Asma' Allah ul 'Husna), exquisitely etched with thousands of tiny perforations. The artist replaced the star-shaped foot of the original lamp with a dome ending in a knop. The lamp hangs from a spun fixing plate attached to the vestibule dome by three suspension arms, each ornamented with an eight-sided star medallion and globe ornaments, connected to the bod of the lamp from cast teardrop eyes.
